I was hopeful about TOR, and I actually do still like and play it, because even though it's in the same boat as Elder Scrolls Online, it still does enough different for me to enjoy it. The levelling experience is very tightly directed, and the rich storytelling gives me compelling reasons to play. It also has a lot more exciting combat than most MMOs, and lets you play it pretty much entirely solo if that's your thing, which is what I did. The only thing really different about ESO is that it's a ridiculously loosely directed levelling experience. People say that Elder Scrolls games would translate well to online play as an MMO, but that just doesn't make sense to me. The appeal of the Elder Scrolls is that you have this massive, beautiful world that's yours to shape. I suppose that an Elder Scrolls MMO might work, but not if it's going for a World of Warcraft style. What's funny is that I found out most of what I know about this from gameinformer, which was heavily pushing the game, but dumped on TOR until it launched. |

If they're trying to do a WoW gameplay style then it's going to bomb. But if they keep it unique to the Elder Scrolls series, then it may work out. |

Looks very WoW from the gameinformer article. I think I remember the name WoW even being tossed around a lot. The only thing in terms of combat that seemed unique was blocking and the stamina system. It said there were random events like you often see on the roads of Skyrim, though. The whole article reeked of desperately trying to make something they know will fail sound good. |

Eh. I think it would have been a better idea to just start adding coop support where friends can run around in your saves, or an online arena where you have to use different, non game breaking characters, sort of like how Mass Effect 3 handles multiplayer, but more customizable and generally Elder Scrolls-y. Once you add other players to an RPG, there's little room for middle ground--you have to go in one focused direction. Elder Scrolls games let you do whatever you want with your character, so an MMO loses some of the ES appeal straight out of the gate, but then Zenimax went the direction that no ES combat has ever felt like(except maybe Morrowind at times) and made it all WoW like. |

I threw a baby out the window when I found out it wasn't Grand Horse Theft Tamriel. The MMO is way to restrictive to even be considered an Elder Scrolls game in my book. |
